missing stencil painted historical glassThis antique church window from the 1800's is typical of many windows of that era that featured some arrangements of similar painted pieces of glass. To achieve uniform results and economies of scale in painting the pieces were painted with the use of a stencil. This picture shows that the uneven results of firing each individual piece. Because of the difficulty in matching these kinds of painted pieces, this picture shows how broken stenciled glass was often replaced with plain or colored glass. Notice how the small stenciled piece of glass above and to the right of the plain replacement pane is most like a shard of the missing piece since the pattern on it does not coincide with the rest of the panel. We duplicated both of these panes so they would blend in with the rest of the panel. |
